"The Purple Album: Special Gold Edition" – das 2015er-Album neu gemastert & erweitert

Als David Coverdale 1973 zu Deep Purple stieß, war er ein relativ unbekannter 21-jähriger Singer-Songwriter. Das sollte sich nun sehr schnell ändern: Als Lead-Sänger der „Rock and Roll Hall of Fame“-Mitglieder nahm er drei Klassikeralben auf, bevor er einige Jahre später mit seiner Band Whitesnake seine eigene musikalische Reise begann.

Coverdale feiert den 50. Jahrestag seines Einstands bei Deep Purple mit einer besonderen Version von „The Purple Album“, Whitesnakes Hommage an seine dreijährige Mitgliedschaft in der legendären Gruppe. Die neu abgemischte, neu gemasterte und erweiterte Edition des Albums von 2015 hält bisher unveröffentlichte Aufnahmen bereit, darunter exakt jenes Demotape, mit dem sich Coverdale einst seinen Platz bei Deep Purple sicherte.

„The Purple Album: Special Gold Edition“ ist ab dem 13. Oktober als 2-CD/Blu-Ray-Set und als 2-LP-Set auf prachtvollem goldenem Vinyl erhältlich. Beide Versionen können HIER vorbestellt werden. Die neu abgemischt Version von „Burn“ ist schon heute digital erhältlich und kann HIER angehört werden.

Coverdale nahm „The Purple Album“ mit Reb Beach an der Gitarre, Michael Devin am Bass, dem Gitarristen Joel Hoekstra (auf seinem ersten Whitesnake-Album) und Drummer Tommy Aldridge auf, der damit erstmals seit „Slip Of The Tongue“ von 1989 wieder auf einem Whitesnake-Studioalbum mitwirkte. Die Band wählte Juwelen von „Burn“ (1974), „Stormbringer“ (1974) und „Come Taste The Band“ (1975) aus, dazu gab es leidenschaftliche Interpretationen von Fan-Favorites wie „Lay Down Stay Down“, „Lady Double Dealer“ und „You Keep On Moving“.

Die 2-CD/Blu-Ray-Version von „The Purple Album: Special Gold Edition“ erweitert das Original um Live-Aufnahmen und Konzertvideos von der „The Purple Tour“ („The Gypsy“, „Mistreated“), offizielle Musikvideos („Sail Away“, „You Fool No One“) und eine Auswahl an bisher unveröffentlichtem Material, darunter sechs alternative Mixe von Albumtracks. Mit der Blu-Ray kann man darüber hinaus einen Blick hinter die Kulissen der Albumproduktion werfen und sich von Coverdale durch jeden Song des Albums geleiten lassen.

Ein besonderes Schmankerl der kommenden Sammlung ist natürlich das Demotape mit vier Songs, das Coverdale einst bei Deep Purple einreichte, in der Hoffnung, der nächste Sänger der Band zu werden. Das Tonband – 1972 aufgenommen mit seiner vorherigen Band, The Fabulosa Brothers –, wurde umfassend restauriert, nachdem Coverdale im Besitz seiner verstorbenen Mutter eher zufällig darüber gestolpert war. In den Linernotes des Albums sagt Coverdale: „Ich hatte keinen Schimmer, dass meine Mutter das Tape hatte... 30 Jahre nach ihrem Ableben öffne ich diese Truhe mit persönlichen Gegenständen meiner Mutter und dann das. Ein Geschenk des Himmels!“ Die Sammlung enthält außerdem einige Demos, die Coverdale aufnahm, während er an Songs für das 1974 veröffentlichte Album „Stormbringer“ von Deep Purple arbeitete.
